Nationally recognized transgender consultant Justin Adkins (he/him) will work with staff at The Brien Center to develop tools and approaches to best serve transgender and non-binary people seeking care. With some simple approaches trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people can feel more included and at ease seeking services. “1.6% of U.S. adults are transgender or nonbinary – that is, their gender differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Additionally, some 5.1% of adults younger than 30 are trans or nonbinary, including 2.0% who are a trans man or trans woman and 3.0% who are nonbinary – that is, they are neither a man nor a woman or aren’t strictly one or the other.” (Pew Center) With increased acceptance and visibility, this number is growing. Holistically serving trans and non-binary people is important for their individual health outcomes as well as for our collective community.
Justin will present about ways to best support and engage trans and non-binary people starting with their very first contact with The Brien Center to assessment of services provided. This workshop will be interactive and appropriate for all staff as it is on all of us to create a supportive and inclusive community. No understanding of terminology or issues facing trans and non-binary people is required, justin will go over that information as well.
